This May 20, the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, stated that the accusation presented by the United States against former president Raúl Castro it is a “political action without any legal basis.”
According to recent statements by the president, the United States accusation only demonstrates “the arrogance and frustration caused to the representatives of the empire by the unbreakable firmness of the Cuban revolution, and the unity and moral strength of its leadership”.
“The ethical height and humanistic sense of his work demolish any infamy that is intended to be raised.” against Army General Raúl Castro,” said Díaz-Canel.
He also described the US decision as “a ridiculous attempt to undermine his stature as a hero.”
The president also presented the “official version” about the incident in which two small planes were shot down in 1996 and left a balance of four people dead, for which Raúl Castro is accused of murder.
“The US lies and manipulates the events surrounding the downing of the planes of the narcoterrorist organization Hermanos al Rescate in 1996“said the president.
He added that the Government of Cuba, at that time, acted “in legitimate defense, within its jurisdictional waters, after successive and dangerous violations” of the island’s airspace.
The version provided by Díaz-Canel contradicts several hypotheses that suggest that the incident occurred in international waters.
Díaz-Canel added that the US authorities were alerted “on more than a dozen occasions” about these events —and other previous actions by Brothers to the Rescue—, but that “the warnings were ignored” and the violations were allowed.
“They did not act recklessly nor did they violate international law, as the US military forces have been doing, with their coldly calculated and openly publicized extrajudicial executions on civilian vessels in the Caribbean and the Pacific“Díaz-Canel added.
