Judge Judith Secaida granted an urgent precautionary measure aimed at all authorized internet provider entities in Guatemala to protect the transmission rights of the 2026 World Cup matches.

“It is ordered as an urgent precautionary measure, directed at all authorized internet provider entities in the country, in order to permanently suspend and/or disable at the national level each of the IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) services and internet pages, identified in the memorial dated June 2, 2026, as well as subdomains and technical variants that derive from them,” the resolution warns.

This is how Judge Secaida, of the Fifth Criminal Court, ruled regarding the broadcast of the 2026 World Cup matches, which began this Thursday, June 11.

The judge resolved an appeal filed by the Public Ministry after companies pointed out the urgency of protecting transmission rights.

“It is manifestly incompatible with the procedural urgency accredited in the record. The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on June 11, that is, four days before the scheduled hearing. By that date the first matches of the tournament will have already been broadcast, and the offending IPTV services identified in the file will have completed the illegal retransmission of said broadcasts, causing irreversible property damage to the holders of the exclusive rights,” the document warned, which is why the judge heard the request earlier. raised.

The memorial presented states that “the essence of the urgent precautionary measure is to prevent said violation from continuing to be committed, preventing damage before it occurs.”

Given this request, the judge guarantees that the transmission of the matches is carried out by the platforms that have acquired the rights authorized by FIFA.

According to the resolution, 13 platforms must have their signals blocked.

The Mexican and South African teams inaugurated the 2026 World Cup this Thursday at the Azteca Stadium, from Mexico City, in the first match of the tournament organized jointly by Mexico, the United States and Canada, EFE reported.

The inauguration, which previously featured a musical show led by the Colombian Shakira, was framed by a strong security and mobility device deployed by the Mexican authorities due to protests by teachers who threatened to boycott the event.
