France and Norway will star in one of the most attractive matches of the last day of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. Both teams arrive with six points and have already qualified for the round of 16, but they still have to define who advances as leader of Group I.
The match, which takes place at the Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium), also brings two of the tournament’s most outstanding scorers face to face: Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.
The French forward has four goals in two games and is going through another high-level World Cup. Mbappé has just scored a double against Iraq, a result with which he reached 16 goals in World Cups and equaled Miroslav Klose’s historical record. In addition, he was only two goals behind Lionel Messi, the all-time leader of the classification with 18.
Haaland arrives with identical numbers in this edition. The Norwegian attacker also has four goals after scoring twice against Iraq and repeating the number against Senegal. With those goals he reached 59 goals in 52 games with Norway, expanding his status as his team’s all-time top scorer.
Two different paths towards the same goal
France has shown balance in its first two games. The team led by Didier Deschamps combines experience, squad depth and offensive speed, with Mbappé as the main reference in attack.
Norway, for its part, has found in the partnership between Martin Ødegaard and Haaland one of the most effective formulas of the tournament. The Scandinavians have scored seven goals in two games and arrive with confidence after beating Iraq and Senegal.
The leadership of Group I in dispute
Although both teams have already secured their presence in the round of 16, finishing as leaders may represent a more favorable matchup in the next round.
The match will start at 1:00 p.m. Guatemala time and concentrates a good part of the attention of the World Cup day. Beyond the classification, the expectation revolves around two forwards who dominate the international scoring panorama and who will seek to tip the balance for their teams.
Mbappé chases Messi’s all-time record. Haaland continues to add numbers that place him among the most prolific scorers of his generation. In Foxborough, both will have a new opportunity to continue writing their story.
