An increase in fuel prices begins at gas stations in the country due to the end of the subsidy

The MEM said that this Friday gas stations were found that no longer apply the subsidy and reflect an increase in Q5 per gallon of gasoline and Q8 per gallon of diesel, while others maintain that subsidy, the entity added.

The institution insisted that prices must change as gas stations exhaust inventories that are still subject to the subsidy.

When consulted, the executive director of the Guatemalan Association of Gasoline Retailers (Ageg), Enrique Meléndez, explained that some stores already show on their billboards prices of Q36.09 per gallon of regular gasoline and Q37.09 per gallon of premium gasoline. Diesel is at Q35.29 per gallon, which confirms that the subsidy was no longer applied.

However, he also indicated that other gas stations maintain their prices with that subsidy.

The prices observed in these are Q31.09 per gallon for regular gasoline, Q32.09 for the superior one, and Q27.29 for diesel.

When Meléndez was asked about why some stations have already made the price change since this Friday, he said that each outlet has its own dynamics, rotation and inventory management, as well as consumer demand.

He also added that because the MEM established reference prices based on the law and its regulations, some stations managed low fuel inventories to minimize risks.

However, it does not attribute the depletion of inventories to greater consumer demand registered on Thursday, July 2, after the end of the subsidy was announced.

The manager insisted that the new price must be applied as the inventories subject to the subsidy are exhausted, as established by the law and regulations with which this subsidy was created.
