Authorities dismantle clandestine surveillance system installed by gang members in Chimaltenango

Investigators from the General Subdirectorate of Criminal Investigation (SGIC) of the National Civil Police (PNC) uninstalled this Friday, July 3, five video surveillance cameras that, according to the institution’s investigations, were placed by members of the Mara Salvatrucha in the San Pablo neighborhood, zone 3 of Chimaltenango.

According to the police investigation, the devices allowed access to the sector to be monitored and alerted about the presence of security agents, which facilitated the commission of criminal activities and the control of that area by the criminal structure.

The authorities indicated that the operation is part of the actions to dismantle the mechanisms used by gang members to maintain surveillance over communities where they operate and strengthen the security of neighbors.

The PNC did not report if the center from which the cameras were administered was located nor if there were arrests related to this case. Investigations continue to establish who financed and installed the video surveillance system.

Also operational in the capital

The uninstallation of this equipment is not an isolated case. In recent weeks, PNC investigators have removed several similar video surveillance systems in different sectors of the capital, where, according to authorities, they were used by gang members to monitor patrol movements, identify police operations and maintain control over territories where they maintain a presence.

The authorities consider that these systems represent a tool used by criminal structures to anticipate the movements of security forces and coordinate illicit activities, so operations to locate and remove them will continue in different parts of the country.
