One of the 17 universities that has to appoint the president of the candidate for Comptroller General of Accounts was left without a rector; This is the Juan José Arévalo Bermejo University.

Erbin Fernando Osorio Fernández notified the Rectors Forum that he presented his resignation from the position of rector, which was effective as of July 1, confirmed a source close to the university.

This resignation occurs less than two weeks before the Rectors’ Forum must meet to elect the postulator’s president; an appointment scheduled for July 15, in the Congress of the Republic.

The rectors must appoint, by majority, the head of this last candidate for 2026, whose election will leave a list of six candidates for head of the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC), leaving the election in charge of the plenary session of deputies.

The Juan José Arévalo Bermejo University is strongly related to Walter Mazariegos, rector of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (Usac), who is accused of remaining in the rectory due to alleged electoral fraud.

Sources close to the universities, who prefer not to be named, have confirmed that Mazariegos intends to obtain the presidency of this candidate.

Analysts identify that this election will be key for the 2027 General Elections, since whoever controls the CGC could influence who competes for a popularly elected position, since the Temporary Certificate of Nonexistence of Claim for Positions, or settlement, is an essential requirement to be able to participate.

The Juan José Arévalo Bermejo University was immersed in a controversy several weeks ago, because it used photographs of the Rafael Landívar University on its website, which were removed after a public complaint from the authorities of that university.
