The legend of the Jaguar Woman will resurface in the staging of the National Modern and Folkloric Ballet of Guatemala with the presentation of the original work Ayanti Hawanma: Yo en tu corazón – The Legend of the Jaguar Woman.
The work, which pays tribute to the oral tradition of Petén, will take the public on a journey along the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, where this ancestral romance occurs.
The staging is part of the 2026 Contemporary Season and will come to the theater so that the public can accompany a fisherman in a destination where mystery, strength and a forbidden passion converge under the light of the moon.
The fisherman will meet a jaguar that, under the light of the full moon, takes the form of a beautiful woman, with whom he falls in love, highlights the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
The work will be choreographed by Lizette Mertins, while the music was created by Paulo Alvarado. The season is dedicated to honoring the career and passion of dancer María Estefani Montúfar Castro.
