Judge Ana Isabel Guerra, of the Court of Extinction of Domain, resolved, at the request of the Public Ministry (MP), to immobilize a property linked to the former president of Guatemala Alejandro Giammattei.
According to the authorities, the property is located in Santa María de Jesús, Sacatepéquez.
To expand some details of the case, prosecutor Carlos García, from the Prosecutor’s Office for Domain Extinction, was approached by journalists when he left the Tower of Courts this Friday, May 23.
He indicated that the precautionary measures requested by the MP were authorized by the aforementioned judiciary, so an investigation will be carried out to establish several extremes.
“There are several farms that make up the El Birth estate,” said the prosecutor, who added that, for now, he could not provide more details because the case is under reservation.
When asked if Giammattei and the former director of the Government Center, Miguel Martínez, could not use the property, the prosecutor replied: “Indeed, it is.”
He affirmed that, for the moment, there is no established deadline to investigate this case that involves the Guatemalan ex -president.
The real estate is in the name of a company that, according to a source close to the case – which preferred anonymity – has several shareholders, including a former official.
According to the authorities’ records, the purchase of the property was by Q50 thousand, but within the property there is a construction that is suspected could be valued at several million quetzales.
The MP has also requested Domain extinction processes on goods linked to former Miguel Martínez official, close to Giammattei.
Martínez faces at least seven accusations before the MP, according to sources linked to different prosecutors. Some of these processes have already resulted in citations to declare.
On May 12, the investigating entity requested the immobilization of eight properties in the name of Martínez, allegedly acquired between 2020 and 2024.
Data provided by a source close to the case, which requested anonymity, indicate that some goods are in the name of Martínez’s friends and family, which generates doubts about the economic profile of the owners.
Sanctioned by the US.
On December 1, 2023, Martínez was sanctioned within the framework of the Magnitsky Global Law on Human Rights, according to the United States Department of the Treasury.
According to the press release, Martínez was sanctioned for “his role in corruption in Guatemala, where he participated in generalized bribery schemes, including schemes related to government contracts.”
Between shouts and push -ups in Antigua Guatemala
On October 14, 2023, Miguel Martínez was booed and pushed by a group of people in Antigua Guatemala.
Martínez attended a mass that began at 10 am. Minutes before the beginning of the Eucharist, some people recognized him and began to circulate on the social network X images of him sitting inside the church.
He immediately received criticism in the social network, but in the following minutes a group of people approached the door of the temple to shout slogans against him and other government officials. Martínez left the Church around 10.30 am and, when leaving, was received with shouts and boos.
