Mexican Embassy in South Africa reveals details of the case of detained Mexican journalists

The Embassy of Mexico in South Africa reported this Friday, April 3, 2026 that it permanently follows up on the reporter’s case Julio Ibáñez and the cameraman Danny García, and that both Mexicans were released on parole on March 25, while a judicial process opened against them continues.

The Mexican representation stated in a statement that they have been provided with consular assistance and protection since March 19, after learning that they were detained by authorities in South Africa for operating a drone in a restricted area of ​​Johannesburg.

In its note, the embassy indicated that, since it became aware of the case, it established contact with South African authorities to verify the charges against them, guarantee access to legal representation and maintain communication with their compatriots.

He added that Both have attended the follow-up hearings accompanied by their lawyer; although he did not give more specific details of the case and the accusations that weigh in the case.

The diplomatic headquarters added that, together with the General Directorate of Africa and the Middle East and the General Directorate of Consular Protection of the Foreign Ministry, it has maintained permanent contact with the families to inform them of the course of legal actions and provide comprehensive assistance.

She also stated that she will continue to pay attention to the upcoming hearings until the process is concluded and both can return to Mexico, while reiterating that the protection of her compatriots is a priority of the Mexican Government.
