President Bernardo Arévalo held meetings this Friday, May 8, with leaders from the region and a senior US official to address issues of security, trade and migration, within the framework of the inauguration of the new president of Costa Rica, Laura Fernández.
Arévalo met with the president of Honduras, Nasry “Tito” Asfura, with whom he spoke about “security and environmental challenges, as well as the great opportunities for trade and tourism,” according to what the president published on his social networks.
“Our countries share history, culture and a great friendship. We continue working together for the well-being of our people,” said Arévalo.
The president’s agenda also included meetings with the president of Chile, José Antonio Kast, and with the Undersecretary of State of the United States, Christopher Landau, before participating in the official transfer of command ceremony.
According to official information, in the meetings Arévalo highlighted the importance of strengthening regional unity based on democracy and justice.
Last Thursday, the Guatemalan president also met with Fernández, to whom he reiterated Guatemala’s support and the need to ensure institutionality in the region.
“A long and deep friendship unites our people, who have entrusted us with the task of unity, democracy and justice. Count on the support of Guatemala for this shared task. I wish you the best in this new stage that is about to begin,” Arévalo wrote.
Fernández assumed the presidency for the period 2026-2030, after winning the elections held last February. With this, she became the second woman to govern Costa Rica and succeeded Rodrigo Chaves in office.
