Colombia’s 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in its debut in the 2026 World Cup provoked a wave of reactions on social networks and turned the tricolor victory into a celebration that transcended the fields.
The team led by Néstor Lorenzo debuted with an important victory in Group K in an Azteca Stadium full of Colombian fans, who made the coffee team feel like a local in the Mexican capital.
The first great joy came in the 40th minute. Luis Díaz filtered a pass for Daniel Muñoz, who finished first and scored the first Colombian goal in this World Cup.
The team maintained its dominance in the second half. Díaz himself and Jáminton Campaz extended the advantage and put the coffee team on track for victory, while Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored the discount for the Uzbek team.
Exciting win
The celebration also moved to social networks. A television channel shared the reaction of Pedro El Escamoso, a character that quickly went viral among fans.
The euphoria did not stay in Mexico. Thousands of Colombians gathered in the ‘fanzones’ installed by the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) in Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Barranquilla and Bucaramanga to follow the World Cup debut.
In Cali, the Parque de la Retreta became a real party.
The attendees, dressed in yellow, blue and red t-shirts, celebrated each of the team’s goals with dances, songs and bugles.
Artists and celebrities such as Sebastián Yatra and Sofía Vergara also joined the digital party, who shared messages and publications in support of the national team, on a night that left Colombia dreaming big since its first game in the 2026 World Cup.
The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, congratulated the coffee team for beating Uzbekistan 1-3 in their debut in Group K of the World Cup, a match played at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City.
“I congratulate the soccer team for its victory in Mexico against Uzbekistan. Go Colombia,” the president wrote on the social network X.
