Arévalo sees the outlook for the inauguration of Walter Mazariegos in the USAC as complicated

The president Bernardo Arevalo referred this Tuesday to the situation faced by the rector of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (Usac), Walter Mazariegos, amid administrative questionslegal and political related to its management and the takeover process.

The president pointed out that, in his opinion, there are elements that complicate his situation. “The Comptroller’s Office has already said that there is no settlement, it also has 17 complaints before the Public Ministry”, he stated.

He added that, in this context, “From the point of view that we understand, the day will not be able to take possession,” Therefore, he considered it necessary to find a way out that allows a legitimate process that adheres to the law within the USAC.

Arévalo added that the situation must be resolved institutionally to avoid greater tensions in the university process, amidst accusations that have marked the discussion around the rector’s office.

The inauguration is scheduled for July 1, 2026.

Without current settlement

The president’s statements occur in a context in which Mazariegos’ management has been under questioning in different areas, both administrative and judicial, from the day of April 8 in which he was re-elected as rector of the USAC.

He Public Ministry registers 17 complaints in different files against Mazariegos. Some have been connected because they are related events and remain in the investigation phase.

In parallel, the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) has reported on audits at USAC that led to findings and criminal complaints related to internal administrative processes of the university. Furthermore, this same Tuesday, June 23, he reiterated that The official does not have a current settlement and that keeps audits in progress.
