Pep Guardiola will end one of the most successful periods in Manchester City’s history. The Spanish coach confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the season, closing a ten-year cycle in which he transformed the Mancunian team into a power in European football.

Guardiola leaves as the winningest coach in City history with 20 titles won, including six Premier Leagues and one Champions League. His official farewell will be this Sunday against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium, which will be his 593rd game in charge of the Citizens.

The Santpedor coach assured that his departure responds to a personal decision and not to an internal or sporting conflict. “Within me I know it’s my time. Nothing lasts forever,” Guardiola expressed in an emotional message in which he recalled the affection he built with the club and the city for a decade.

Although the announcement shook English football, within the City environment the end of the cycle could already be sensed after the recent departures of key figures in the sporting structure. Enzo Maresca appears as the main candidate to take over the bench, after having previously worked alongside Guardiola at the club.

A decade that changed English football

Pep Guardiola arrived at Manchester City in 2016 with the mission of turning the club into an absolute protagonist in European football. With an idea based on ball control, high pressing and possession, the Spanish coach built one of the most dominant teams of the last decade.

Guardiola’s impact went far beyond the titles won. His style transformed the identity of Manchester City and set a trend in world football, becoming a model that numerous teams tried to replicate in different leagues and categories.

The future of the Spanish coach remains unknown, although directing a national team appears to be one of his great pending objectives. Meanwhile, Guardiola is preparing to say goodbye to the Etihad Stadium this Sunday surrounded by the recognition of a fan who considers him a legend of the club.
