The disappearance and murder of Litzy Amelia Cordon Saved became a case that resonated Zacapa during the last few years.

The young woman, 20 years old and a university student, disappeared on October 5, 2020 in Teculutan.

The news generated alarm from the first hours because it was a young woman known in the community and whose disappearance was immediately reported by her relatives.

A day later, authorities located his body. The discovery marked the beginning of an investigation that captured public attention both due to the seriousness of the crime and the circumstances that began to emerge during the investigations.

The family bond that marked the case

One of the elements that caused the most commotion among the community was the identity of the main suspect. The MP’s investigations pointed to Kevin Manolo Rivas Cordón, the victim’s cousin.

The accusation provoked a strong reaction due to the family closeness between the two.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Litzy was a victim of kidnapping or kidnapping and was later murdered. The investigators’ hypothesis maintained that the crime would have been planned and executed by people close to his environment.

The disappearance and kidnapping calls

On the morning of October 5, 2020, Litzy disappeared and hours later, her family received a call.

Edgar Cordón, the young woman’s father, recalled that he returned to his home after working in a field when his mother informed him that they had called to inform them that Litzy was kidnapped. As reported, the responsible demanded Q5 million in exchange for freeing her.

The calls continued throughout the day. According to Cordón’s testimony, whoever communicated with the family presented himself as a negotiator of the kidnapping and pressured them to hand over the money. “They were adamant that we pay them that money (…) because if not they were going to take her life,” he recalled.

However, hours later they received one last communication and the next day, the family received the news they feared.

The discovery that shocked the family

On the morning of October 6, 2020, investigators notified the Anti-Kidnapping Command about the location of a body in Teculután.

“Unfortunately it was hers,” Edgar Cordón recalled when recounting one of the most difficult moments for his family. The father explained that he went to the scene after being informed of the discovery.

According to what he said, he found his daughter among the vegetation and the scene was impossible to assimilate. “It was too difficult to witness that (…) I couldn’t stand it, I had to move from there,” he said.

Subsequent investigations made it possible to establish that Litzy had been the victim of a violent incident, which gave rise to an investigation that for years sought to identify and prosecute those responsible.

A judicial process of almost six years

Investigations advanced over the following years as the case moved through the different stages of the justice system. Two months after his murder, on December 10, 2020, Kevin Rivas Cordon He was captured and then in January of the following year, he was linked to proceedings for the crimes that the Prosecutor’s Office accused him of.

As the file progressed, the MP presented evidence and testimonies to support the accusation in court.

The oral and public debate began years after the events, reactivating interest in the case.

During the trial, the Prosecutor’s Office requested a sentence of more than a century in prison for the crimes it attributed to the accused.

The sentence

Finally, the Highest Risk Court B issued a ruling and found Kevin Manolo Rivas Cordón guilty for the crimes of murder and kidnapping or kidnapping.

The judges imposed a total sentence of 70 years in prison, distributed over 35 years for each of the crimes for which he was convicted.

The resolution put an end to one of the most important stages of the case, almost six years after the disappearance and death of Litzy Cordón
