The Ministry of the Interior (Mingob) He issued new regulations that force vehicles in Guatemala to hire a civil liability insurance, with the aim of covering damage to third parties in case of traffic accidents.
The regulations were published on March 17, 2025 and establish provisions for different types of vehicles: Motorcycles, private cars, passenger and cargo transport.
The minimum insurance coverage must be a certain amount of monthly minimum wages (set in Q347 thousand 782), depending on the vehicle, with specific amounts according to the seriousness of the injury. It also contemplates compensation in cases of temporary disability.
Drivers must carry the Constancy of insurance in printed or digital format.
The provisions establish that compliance supervision will be in charge of the Traffic Department of the National Civil Police (PNC) and of the municipalities.

2. Other implications

4. Compensation amounts
Compensations are details according to the seriousness of the injuries, from loss of a finger to total disability.

Any injury that causes partial or total loss of organs, senses or members not described above, must be compensated according to the following classification:

5. Insurance proof
The document must be carried in printed or digital format and include essential data such as the insurer, validity, plate number and QR code. It will be mandatory to show it to the authorities when they require it. (Article 8).
6. Application to foreign vehicles
The regulation also requires that vehicles with foreign plates have insurance while driving in Guatemala. (Article 10).
7. SANCTIONS FOR FREPPLEMENT
The regulation establishes specific sanctions for drivers and owners of vehicles that do not have the mandatory insurance. (Articles 11 and 12).
