The Ministry of the Interior (Mingob) He issued new regulations that force vehicles in Guatemala to hire a civil liability insurance, with the aim of covering damage to third parties in case of traffic accidents.

The regulations were published on March 17, 2025 and establish provisions for different types of vehicles: Motorcycles, private cars, passenger and cargo transport.

The minimum insurance coverage must be a certain amount of monthly minimum wages (set in Q347 thousand 782), depending on the vehicle, with specific amounts according to the seriousness of the injury. It also contemplates compensation in cases of temporary disability.

4. Compensation amounts

Compensations are details according to the seriousness of the injuries, from loss of a finger to total disability.

5. Insurance proof

The regulation also requires that vehicles with foreign plates have insurance while driving in Guatemala. (Article 10).

7. SANCTIONS FOR FREPPLEMENT

The regulation establishes specific sanctions for drivers and owners of vehicles that do not have the mandatory insurance. (Articles 11 and 12).
