Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez are contesting the second round of the presidential elections in Peru this June 7, where, so far, they have registered, 15 incidents nationwideas reported by the president of the National Elections Jury (JNE), Roberto Burneo.
Among the incidents detected are irregularly marked voting ballots and at least one attempted takeover of a voting center, according to Burneo.
In the first hours of the elections, the official confirmed the identification of 15 incidents in different voting centers, the majority registered in Lima. Therefore, immediate measures have been taken, such as replacement of marked ballots for new ones.
“They were representatives (party delegates) who invalidated the voting cards,” said the president of the JNE and clarified that this situation “in no case invalidates the voting table.”
The JNE is the only body competent to declare a voting station invalid or for a political party submits a request for annulment.
Burneo explained that the incidents occurred in Surco and La Molina, in Lima, and that they are being attended to with support of the National Police and the Prosecutor’s Office.
“We cannot irresponsibly talk about fraud, we reject any attempt to delegitimize the process,” said the President of the JNE, Roberto Burneo, at the same time calling for the responsibility of all state authorities and actors in these elections. pic.twitter.com/04CxQuUMMq

Furthermore, he confirmed that there was an attempt to take over a voting center after complaints from delegates of political organizations.
The head of the JNE stressed that “There is no fraud, the process is carried out with absolute regularity” and that the alerts are attended to in accordance with current electoral regulations.
Burneo called on the calms the responsibility of the electoral authorities now and all political actors.
The president of the JNE specifically mentioned the Ombudsman’s Office, which warned in X about a “new modality that borders on fraud,” related to the appearance of previously marked ballots in voting centers.
“We denounce that It would be an attempted fraud by attempting to annul votes by placing marks on the voting cards before they are issued by citizens,” the Ombudsman’s Office stated.

However, Burneo rejected the “narrative of fraud by any authority” because, in his opinion, the necessary measures have been taken in response to the reported incidents and he reiterated the call for calm and to wait for the official results.
“We cannot irresponsibly claim that this is fraud,” he said.
He specified that they are the Special Electoral Juries (JEE) who will determine if there was any irregularityonce the investigations into the incidents have been concluded.
