The murder of Councilor II of San Juan Sacatepéquez, Geralbert Miguel Najarro García Salas, is investigated by the authorities under two lines of investigation: possible political conflicts and personal problems.

According to preliminary information collected at the crime scene, the attack occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, May 17, at the entrance to the Villas del Quetzal residential complex, in San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala.

According to the report from the National Civil Police (PNC), two men on board a motorcycle watched the victim in the Volcanes del Quetzal residential areas and later intercepted him and shot him while he was driving on the pick-up truck with plates P-628KNG.

Prosecutors from the Public Ministry located 12 ballistic evidence at the crime scene. Additionally, inside the vehicle the victim was driving they found a gun, two cell phones and several documents.

According to the Police, one of the main hypotheses points to possible political rivalries.

“It is presumed that the criminal act against the deceased is derived from political problems, since due to the type of position he holds, according to family members he had several enemies,” details the PNC.

The second line of investigation is related to conflicts that arose when García Salas presided over the administration of the Villas del Quetzal residential complex.

“The deceased was prohibited from approaching the Villas del Quetzal residential complex, for the reason that during the time he was president of said residential complex he left several enemies for the administration,” the report states.

Municipality of San Juan Sacatepéquez regrets murder

The mayor of that municipality, Juan Carlos Pellecer Agustín, published a video in which he lamented the death of the councilor.

“One of his councilors was cowardly murdered, who was actively participating in the decision-making for the development of San Juan Sacatepéquez. Today we express our deepest condolences to the family, but also to the people of San Juan. We want to tell them that today, more than ever, we are prepared to continue with this development that makes many uncomfortable,” said the mayor.

He added that he condemns and repudiates the attack, in which the councilor was killed from behind.

“In memory of Miguel, as we affectionately told him, he will be our inspiration to continue the work that we once planned. Miguel, wherever you are, I know that your people will always come first,” said Pellecer.
