The long-awaited meeting between the teams of Mexico and England, corresponding to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, was delayed one hour due to adverse weather conditions in the vicinity of the Mexico City Stadiumknown worldwide as the Azteca Stadium.
The game was scheduled for 6 p.m. from Guatemala, but will begin at 7 p.m. after an intense storm, accompanied by electrical activity, forced the organizers to modify the schedule for safety reasons.
Heavy rains and electrical shocks affected Mexico City during the afternoon, although conditions subsequently improved. Weather forecasts, however, maintain the possibility of new rainfall during the day.
Despite the delay, the atmosphere in the stadium remains festive. Some 75,000 fans occupy the stands of the historic venue and tirelessly encourage the Mexican team with chants of “Mexico, Mexico” and traditional music, which adds color and enthusiasm to the run-up to the match.
The only pause in the celebration occurred when the stadium’s giant screens reported that the game would be delayed an hour. The fans reacted calmly and continued cheering on their team while waiting for the match to start.
The duel between Mexico and England is the match number 92 of the 2026 World Cup and also marks the farewell of Mexico as host of the tournament. The country organized 13 meetings distributed between Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
The winner will advance to the quarterfinals, where Norway, which previously secured its classification among the eight best teams in the tournament, is already waiting.
With a packed stadium and great expectations, Mexico and England will look for a place in the next round of the World Cup.
