The president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguezrejected the statements of the American president, donald trump, about a possible annexation of the South American country as the “51st state” of USA and assured that this possibility “would never be foreseen” due to the independence nature of Venezuelans.
Rodríguez responded from The Hague to comments made by Trump after Venezuela’s victory over Italy in the semifinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The American president wrote in Truth Social that “good things are happening to the country” and then asked ironically: “State number 51?” Later, according to Fox News, he stated that he is “seriously” considering that idea.
“That is not planned. It would never be planned because if we Venezuelans have something, it is that we love our independence process,” said Rodríguez.
Delcy Rodríguez defends Venezuelan sovereignty
The Venezuelan official affirmed that the country’s history is marked by independence struggles and maintained that Venezuela will continue to defend its sovereignty against any attempt to foreign intervention.
“Our history is a history of glory of men and women who gave their lives to make us, not a colony, but a free country,” he declared.
Rodríguez also pointed out that Venezuela will continue to defend “the integrity, sovereignty and independence” of the country.
Trump said he is analyzing the possibility
According to journalist John Roberts of Fox News, Trump commented during a phone call that he is “seriously” studying turning Venezuela into the 51st state of the United States, because, as he assured, “Venezuelans love it.”
The US president also recently highlighted Venezuela’s oil potential and stated that the country has “40 billion dollars in oil.”
It is not the first time that Trump has made similar comments about Venezuela. On other occasions he jokingly assured that he could run for Venezuelan presidential elections and stated that citizens “are dancing in the streets” because of US oil investments.
Venezuela avoids raising diplomatic tension
Despite the rejection of Trump’s statements, Rodríguez avoided harshening the diplomatic tone and affirmed that Caracas maintains a cooperation agenda with Washington.
“That is the course, that is the path,” said the official when referring to bilateral relations.
Rodríguez also highlighted that Venezuela has “the largest oil reserves on the planet” and one of the largest reserves of natural gas in the world.
The statements occur months after the capture and departure from power of Nicolás Maduro, a situation that opened a new political stage in Venezuela and redefined the relationship with the United States.
Additionally, the UN recently projected that Venezuela could exceed US$22 billion in oil revenues during 2026, driven by new investments and energy exports.
